What is a 1099-MISC form?

Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Information, is an IRS information return used to report payments that do not fit the more common 1099-NEC (nonemployee compensation). It covers things like rent, royalties, prizes, and awards.

The payer files it with the IRS and sends the recipient a copy to use when filing their own tax return.

What is a 1099-MISC used for?

  • Reports rent paid for office space, machinery, or land.
  • Reports royalties from intellectual property, oil, gas, or mineral rights.
  • Reports prizes and awards not tied to services performed.
  • Reports other miscellaneous income that has its own dedicated box.

What information is required?

Before you start, have the following ready:

  • The payer's name, address, and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).
  • The recipient's name, address, and TIN.
  • The total amount paid, broken out by category (rent, royalties, other income).
  • Any federal income tax withheld under backup withholding.

What do the boxes on a 1099-MISC mean?

  • Box 1: rents paid.
  • Box 2: royalties.
  • Box 3: other income not reported elsewhere.
  • Box 4: federal income tax withheld under backup withholding.
  • Box 6: medical and health care payments.
  • Boxes 16 to 18: state tax withheld, the payer's state number, and state income.

How to fill out a 1099-MISC

  • Enter the payer's name, address, and TIN on the left.
  • Enter the recipient's name, address, and TIN.
  • Fill in the box matching the type of payment (rent, royalties, other income).
  • Box 4: enter any federal income tax withheld.
  • Add state details only if you withheld state tax.

Who needs to file one?

A business generally files a 1099-MISC when it paid at least $600 in rent, prizes and awards, or other qualifying income during the year, or at least $10 in royalties. Common filers include landlords' property managers, licensors, and businesses awarding cash prizes.

When is a 1099-MISC due?

The recipient copy is generally due by January 31 following the tax year. The IRS filing copy is due by February 28 on paper, or March 31 if filed electronically.
