What is a 1098-T form?

Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, is an IRS information return that an eligible educational institution sends to a student who paid qualified tuition and related expenses during the year.

The student (or whoever claims them as a dependent) uses it to claim education tax credits, like the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit.

What is a 1098-T used for?

  • Reports qualified tuition and related expenses billed or paid during the year.
  • Reports scholarships and grants that reduced the amount the student paid.
  • Supports a claim for an education tax credit on the student's or parent's tax return.

What information is required?

  • The school's name, address, and Employer Identification Number (EIN).
  • The student's name, address, and Social Security Number or ITIN.
  • The total qualified tuition and related expenses paid.
  • Any scholarships or grants received.

What do the boxes on a 1098-T mean?

  • Box 1: payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses.
  • Box 4: adjustments made for a prior year.
  • Box 5: scholarships or grants.
  • Box 8: whether the student was at least half-time.
  • Box 9: whether the student was a graduate student.

Who needs to file one?

An eligible college, university, or vocational school generally sends a 1098-T to every student who paid qualified tuition during the year, unless an exception applies (for example, tuition fully covered by a formal billing arrangement with an employer or a scholarship).

When is a 1098-T due?

Schools generally send the student copy by January 31 following the tax year, so it is available in time to file that year's tax return.
